Many Catholics are choosing to have their remains cremated in lieu of burial. This practice has been on the increase in the past several years as a personal choice and as a way to reduce the costs of funeral expenses. The Mansfield Catholic Cemeteries Committee has explored an option in lieu of the final burial of one’s remains. The installation of columbaria in cemeteries for the final resting place of one’s cremated remains has become a preferred choice for many.
A columbarium is a marble structure with forty-eight (48) one-foot square niches within the structure (24 niches per side). Each niche is able to hold two small urns. Pictured is a columbarium similar to the ones being considered for installation.
Each niche will have its own individual black marble faceplate with an individual engraving based on the specific desires of the family. Laser etching and names and dates of the deceased can be engraved on each niche. The Mansfield Catholic Cemeteries Committee is planning on the installation of four columbaria at Prince of Peace Catholic Cemetery.
The Mansfield Catholic Cemeteries Committee hopes to begin work on the columbaria project in the near future. To fund the project, the committee will host a special pre-sale event. The cost for one niche will be $1,300 and will include the engraving on the front plate. This cost is half the cost of a full burial in two grave spaces. You can also make a tax-deductible gift to the Mansfield Catholic Cemeteries Committee and designate your gift to the columbaria project.
